Wild Rice Genus Details

Also called Indian rice or water oats, this tall, aquatic, primarily annual plant grows in marshes, lakes, and streams in Canada and the eastern U.S. These plants have long flat leaves and long flowering structures called panicles, with female flowers on the upper branches and male flowers below. Flowering occurs from June to the end of summer, producing large amounts of pollen.

Although the grass family in general is considered significant allergenically, this genus is not typically considered to be problematic. Reported to have low pollen allergenicity and probable low exposure frequency. However, it has been reported in Minnesota to be significant.

Wild Rice Pollen Description

Grains are spheroidal to ovoidal, sometimes elliptical. The exine is thin and the surface is granular to finely reticuloid. Pocaceae apertures are 1-porate, with the pores usually circular to ovoidal.
Grains are 22-122 micrometers in diameter.
